Reindeer sledding or husky sledding?

Tromsø offers both, and many visitors only have time for one. They are very different days. One is a slow glide and a Sami meal by the fire, the other a noisy rush behind a team of dogs who live to run.

The short version

Choose reindeer for a calm half day with Sami culture that fits a cruise call. Choose huskies for speed, adrenaline and the chance to drive your own sled. Families with small children and travelers who feel the cold usually prefer reindeer; active couples who want a story to tell usually prefer dogs.

Why reindeer suit a day in port

Reindeer tours are shorter and closer. Our pick leaves the Prostneset terminal and is back four hours later, and the camp closest to town takes three and a half. Most husky yards sit further out, in valleys like Breivikeidet or Tamokdalen, so the day is longer and the margin before all-aboard thinner. Timing a tour around your ship is in our cruise guide.

Why huskies win on thrill

Nothing about a reindeer ride prepares you for the noise of a husky yard as the teams are hitched, with dozens of dogs howling to go. Then the brake comes off, the noise stops, and you fly. On self-drive tours you stand on the runners and steer with your weight and the brake. It is physical, sometimes a little scary, and most people love it. If that sounds like you, a reindeer ride may feel slow.

The gentle option, done well

Our pick from Tromsø Arctic Reindeer fits the sled ride, the herd, lunch in the lavvu and a joik into four hours from the cruise terminal, for ~$197.

Doing both

With two days, or an overnight call, do both, reindeer one morning and huskies the next. Camp Tamok, a wilderness camp run by Arctic Resorts, keeps both dogs and reindeer, which is why its reindeer tour starts with a short minibus ride from the dog yard to the herd. Some combination tours advertise dogs and reindeer together; read them carefully, because the reindeer part is often feeding only, without a sled.

Animal welfare in both

Both animals are bred for this work. Sled dogs are athletes who visibly love to run, and good kennels rest them and retire them well. Reindeer have pulled Sami sleds for centuries, but tourist rides are kept short and slow, and good camps set weight limits. What to look for at a reindeer camp is in its own guide, and what a reindeer ride is really like in another.

Reindeer, dogs or both?

Is reindeer or husky sledding better in Tromsø?

It depends on what you want. Reindeer sledding is calm, cultural and short; husky sledding is fast, loud and often lets you drive. With one morning in port, reindeer fits more easily.

Is husky sledding more expensive than reindeer sledding?

Usually. Half-day husky tours in Tromsø cost about $230 to $350, reindeer tours with a sled ride about $190 to $230.

Can I drive the reindeer sled myself?

No. A guide leads the reindeer, or the sleds follow a lead animal. Driving your own sled is a husky experience.

Which is better for small children?

Reindeer. The ride is slow and short, children can sit on a parent's lap, and our pick has booster seats on the bus.

Can I do both on one tour?

A few combination tours exist, but the reindeer part is often feeding only. If the sled ride matters, book the two separately.
